Black & Minority Ethnic Community Project
Background
BMECP is an infrastructure organisation that supports the many community organisations serving the diverse black and minority ethnic population in Brighton & Hove. The City is home to one of the most cosmopolitan
populations in the south east, but many—particularly those who are refugees or asylum seekers—have poor English and lack marketable skills. Consequently, the BME population are disproportionately disadvantaged and do not play a full part in or benefit from the City’s vibrant economy or social facilities.

Our Role
CSC have a long relationship with BMECP, and have provided two specific kinds of support to the organisation:

  1. A full Business Plan to help them move into a new Community Centre; unfortunately, this move to derelict business premises failed to achieve Planning Permission and, after a protracted search for an alternative base, we are working with them in developing a new Business Plan for when they move to a
brand new, purpose built facility in the City Centre

  2. Successful funding applications to the National Lottery and the Home Office for funding to expand the range of services provided by BMECP to their client members.

Delivery
In developing the Business Plan, CSC consultants reviewed the Partnership’s activities with members of the Board, staff and also considered the evidence provided by members in a questionnaire survey undertaken by the organisation itself. A ten year income and expenditure analysis formed the main part of the financial report to the Plan, along with estimates of the new Centre’s start up costs and projections of income and expenditure needs in the fist year of operation.

Both the Business Plan and the funding applications required us to demonstrate a thorough understanding of BMECP’s aims and objectives, and the opportunities for the organisation to serve some of the most disadvantaged communities in the City of Brighton & Hove.
